This is because the Cardinal lost to another Pac-12 North rival in the Washington State Cougars up in Pullman last week by a field goal, 24-21.

David Shaw agreed about their prowess, saying, “they don’t give up big plays, they don’t give up touchdowns, ” calling the Washington defense, “extremely well-coordinated, this group’s as good as we’ve seen since we’ve been here”.

Holding Love in check will be an imposing task for Washington, which ranks sixth nationally in rushing defense (91.1) as well as its nation-best 240.9 total yards allowed per game. “He’s just the guy that makes completions, wins games, scrambles when he needs to, makes all the right decisions”.

Costello needs to be a game-manager coming off last week’s loss to Washington State in which he was 9-for-20 for 105 yards with one interception and one rushing TD.

“He’s more of the Drew Brees than the Andrew Luck-looking quarterback, but when you watch him, he plays the game the way you’re supposed to play it: with energy, passion and emotion”. While its last home game vs. awful UMass was too close for comfort, Alabama’s offense is mediocre at best, and asking the Tide to cover 14 in an environment like this is probably too much. Therefore, there’s potential for Washington to finish with at least two wins over Top 25 teams, and Stanford could potentially sneak back in. He’s a tough kid, and a lot of the big runs he’s had this year is not because he’s had a ideal block. “He’s a pretty special talent”.

Regarding offense, Washington has a star running back of their own in Myles Gaskin, who ran for 123 yards on 17 carries against OR last Saturday. “We explained what a fullback is to our defense today”, Petersen joked Monday.

There’s one other intriguing fillip to the matchup. That would tie Glenn “Pop” Warner’s school record set from 1924-32.

“It’s still kind of surreal”, Shaw said of approaching the milestone. Sign up now for a free seven-day trial.

Injuries: Washington – TE Hunter Bryant (knee), TE David Ajamu (knee), WR Quinten Pounds (undisclosed noncontact injury), WR Chico McClatcher (ankle), OT Trey Adams (knee), CB Jordan Miller (leg) are out. Stanford – CB Alijah Holder (knee) and OT Walker Little (undisclosed) are out. LB Curtis Robinson (undisclosed) is probable.

THROW IT UP: Stanford will try to be at least a bit more balanced on offense behind sophomore QB K.J. Costello, and he has some big, big targets to throw to.

You need a multi-dimensional offense to beat Washington and its stingy defense, and Stanford doesn’t have the playmakers even if Bryce Love is healthy. Stanford’s starting receivers are 6-foot-3 JJ Arcega-Whiteside and 6-2 Trenton Irwin, and the tight end is 6-6 Dalton Schultz. Perhaps more specifically, the committee hasn’t been impressed with the soft schedule Chris Petersen’s team has played to date.
