A gender-reversed take on the 2000 hit What Women Want has landed the Empire actress as its star.
Remember the year 2000? The first X-Men movie arguably created the template for the modern superhero movie, parents and censor groups were in a tizzy about a rapper named Eminem, Angelina Jolie was married to Billy Bob Thornton, and Survivor kicked off the reality TV boom. It was a strange, yet simpler time, a time that made What Women Want, an unintentionally hilarious, outdated, and glaringly sexist Mel Gibson-vehicle, a bona fide box office smash.
No matter how poorly that film has aged, in 2017, Hollywood can’t let a successful idea die, and that’s why we’re getting What Men Want from Paramount Players. Flipping the original on its head and hopefully ditching the underlying level of misogyny present in both its script and star, Paramount has landed Empire powerhouse Taraji P. Henson to headline the project and has fast-tracked the film to meet a January 11, 2019 release date.
In the original movie, an arrogant chauvinist played by Gibson gets the ability to read the minds of women. The gender-reversed follow-up will center on a female struggling to advance at a male-dominated sports agency, who uses the ability to hear the thoughts of men to get a leg up on her male colleagues.
We’ll give you more updates on What Men Want as they become available.
