1,273 people from the North East were referred to the government’s counter-terrorism programme in 2015-16, more than any other region except London.

The region had the highest number of those flagged up to Prevent over suspected right-wing extremism: 159.

The vast majority – 805 people from the North East – were reported for potential intervention due to concerns around Islamist extremism.

The area classified as the North East in the Home Office figures includes Yorkshire.

347 of those from the region who were reported due to concerns about their ideology were aged under 15.

The Prevent scheme aims to reduce the risk to the UK by intervening when people are seen as being vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism.
