New College Football Playoff rankings put Alabama back on top

Alabama is back on top.

After No. 1 Georgia lost to Auburn, The Crimson Tide moved to No. 1 in the latest College Football Playoff poll released Tuesday night. Alabama had been ranked second in each of the first two versions of the ranking released every Tuesday on national television.

Alabama (10-0) faces Mercer at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday. After that, it heads to No. 6 Auburn for what amounts to an SEC West title game.

A year ago, the Tide was No. 1 in every playoff ranking straight through the final version after winning the SEC title. It faces a tougher stretch if it hopes to be the only team to make each of the first four playoff fields.

Should it beat Auburn, the Tide would have to face No. 7 Georgia in the league championship in Atlanta. The Bulldogs slipped all the way to No. 7 after its first loss of the season.
