Karim Benzema reveals Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho once called him a cat while the pair were at Real Madrid

Karim Benzema has opened up about how he ‘lost his head’ with Jose Mourinho… when the then Real Madrid coach likened him to a cat.

Benzema, the France forward, made the comments during a Canal Plus documentary in his homeland, opening up on his time at Madrid.

The 29-year-old, who snubbed Manchester United to move to the Bernabeu in 2009, was particularly forthcoming about his relationship with Mourinho. The Portuguese coached him for three years in Madrid and is now the manager at Old Trafford.

Benzema says they had only one major dispute – and it centred on an extraordinary press conference given by Mourinho just weeks after he arrived at Madrid in 2010.

With Gonzalo Higuain injured at the time, Mourinho offered up an unusual metaphor to explain his lack of options in attack – aiming a thinly veiled dig at Benzema in the process.

Mourinho said: “If you don’t have a dog to go out hunting with you, and you have a cat, you have to go out with a cat. You can’t go out alone.

“We only have one attacker, who is Benzema. If Benzema plays, we don’t have anyone on the bench.

“If you don’t have Higuain you have a problem.”

Benzema revealed in the documentary that he confronted Mourinho about the comments afterwards in a one-on-one meeting.

“I said what I had to say to him. We met for an hour,” Benzema continued, adding that he told Mourinho: “I am a footballer, you are my coach. I respect you, so you must respect me as a footballer.

“From then on there were no more stories of cats, or dogs or whatever.

“I am somewhat timid but if you are going to laugh at me, you’re going to have a confrontation with me.

“When things are talked about, everything goes better.”
