If the thought of bed bugs makes your skin crawl, you might want to know the one thing you’re doing wrong which can attract them.

Saying “don’t let the bed bugs bite” before you settle down to sleep is one thing, but there’s something more practical you can do.

And as it turns out, it’s not just your bed which is the problem, reports the Daily Mirror.

Many of us are basically issuing an open invitation to bed bugs to come and take up residence in our homes, without even realising we’re doing it.

How sick do you have to be before having a day off? One in four of us would need to be in hospital

An experiment conducted by the University of Sheffield revealed that bed bugs are are attracted to the allure of dirty laundry baskets – which are often kept in bedrooms.

It found that insects are drawn to soiled laundry, which researchers believe is the reason why so many of the insects are able to travel from hotels into people’s homes.

In the study, four tote bags were placed in the presence of bed bugs in two rooms which were both temperature-controlled.

Two of the bags contained dirty clothes, while the other two contained clean laundry.

One room also received an increase in carbon dioxide concentration to simulate the effect of a human breathing.

The results revealed that in the absence of real humans, bed bugs were twice as likely to head for bags containing dirty clothes.

So now you know – keep that laundry basket out of the bedroom.
