Former goalkeeper on the traits that put Swansea City star in the top five in the Premier League ahead of Burnley visit
Few know what it takes to be a Premier League goalkeeper better than Shay Given.
The former Newcastle United, Manchester City and Stoke City player has made the third-most appearances for his position in the competition’s history, and one current ‘keeper in particular has caught his eye this season.
“I’ve been very impressed with Lukasz Fabianski,” says Given, who made the last of his 451 PL appearances in 2016/17.
“He’s in a team fighting relegation and that can be bad for your confidence, but it never seems to faze him. He’s one of Swansea City’s best players.
“Saves, crosses, kicks; he’s right up there with the top four or five goalkeepers in the League. His save percentage is 75%, again one of the highest in the League. He’s a top ‘keeper.”
Fabianski and Swansea travel to Turf Moor on Saturday, and Given says the Poland international can frustrate a Burnley side who will be on the front foot.
“It’s probably going to be a close game,” says the former Republic of Ireland international. “Swansea are stuttering and Burnley will look at it and think it’s another chance to get three points. They’re flying.
“But I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a draw. There’s maybe only going to be one goal in it; Burnley will have more chances being at home, but Fabianski can keep them out.”
