He scored 81 goals in 142 appearances for Liverpool, but left Kopites fuming when he joined Chelsea in 2011.

But is Fernando Torres set for a surprise return to the Premier League?

According to The Mirror , he just might be.

A report on Sunday claims that Torres is expecting to leave Atletico Madrid on loan in the new year, with first team opportunities limited – and likely to be even more limited once Diego Costa arrives at the club.

The Mirror say that Newcastle and Southampton are interested in the 33-year-old – both are in dire need of a striker.

And we know how much Rafa Benitez loves ‘El Nino’ of course!

Torres has 18 months remaining on his contract with the Spanish side and he wants to spend next season with his hometown club.

He plans to retire at the end of his deal and wants his last season before hanging up his boots to be with Atletico regardless of how much action he does or doesn’t see.

However, Torres is desperate to play as much as he can for the remainder of this campaign and is adamant he can still do a job in the Premier League. It is reported that Torres also has options outside of Europe, notably in the USA and China.

Any club wanting to borrow Torres for the rest of the season would have to pay part of his salary which, annually, is around £2.2m.
