Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy is critical of their deal for Tiemoue Bakayoko.
He says they were wrong to sign Bakayoko when they have players like Ruben Loftus-Cheek at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s about opportunities and young players need opportunities,” Cundy, who is employed by Chelsea, told talkSPORT.
“And unfortunately my club – it’s the biggest failing since Roman [Abramovich] has come in – has not produced a young player that’s come through the academy.
“And any fan will tell you that’s what you want to see. You want to see someone wear that shirt that represents you, that knows that club and comes through the academy system.
“People say Chelsea’s academy doesn’t work. Four players played yesterday that came through Chelsea’s academy.
“The academy system works, where it stops and where it fails, is the path from the academy and the players who are out on-loan – into the first team.
“And it’s going to be blocked if you’re going to buy players like [Tiemoue] Bakayoko.”
