2018 Toyota HiLux gets a beastly make over

Images of the 2018 Toyota HiLux facelift have surfaced online, revealing a new front end and a rugged, off-road oriented model for the Thai market.

The pictures, published by MZ Crazy Cars on Facebook, show the range of HiLux exterior visual changes, along with interior updates and a model called the ‘Rocco’.

Front end styling may look familiar thanks to inspiration taken from the North American market Toyota Tacoma pick up truck.

The new front-end features a vertical cluster for the fog lights, with the headlights and LED daytime running lights carried over from the current HiLux.

Inside the cabin, changes appear to be limited to the instrument binnacle and some new detailing on the dashboard surrounds.

Engine and safety features remain unchanged, with the suite of HiLux engines likely set to carry over to the facelifted model, they include:

The harder SR5-based Rocco features a grey rear bumper bar, 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres, a black sports bar with bed liner, Rocco insignia, gloss black grille, black metallic trim inside the cabin and black wheel arch trims.

Toyota was spotted working on an autonomous emergency braking features with pedestrian detection some time ago, and the technology was most recently rolled out across the 2018 Landcruiser Prado range.

Looking at these images, there doesn’t appear to be any of that technology fitted to HiLux. Ford is expected to be the first manufacturer to offer this technology in a dual-cab ute when the PXII Ranger is updated in 2018.

The Rocco model could come to Australia wearing TRD badges, given the current model is more a sticker pack than a significant design change from the SR5 HiLux.

Toyota Australia didn’t offer any comment on a HiLux facelift when contacted by CarAdvice. Certainly a strange move given HiLux pricing and specifications were only just updated.
